The Critical Industry Society Ltd (The CIS)

The Critical Industry Society (CIS) is a member‑driven organisation bringing together individuals from sectors essential to the functioning of society and the economy.

Formerly the Coal Industry Society, the name now reflects its broader membership across energy, logistics and raw materials. Founded in 1929, it has continually adapted to the evolving needs of the UK’s critical industries.

Originally a meeting place for suppliers to the British coal industry, the CIS acknowledges coal’s historic role while focusing on new technologies that support future energy and critical mineral security.

The CIS hosts two business lunches each year and an Annual Conference. This year’s Conference will be held at the Milner York Hotel, featuring industry speakers, panel discussions, entertainment and networking opportunities.

Today, the CIS is a vibrant, inclusive group welcoming members from across the wider energy and related sectors. Membership is free and awarded to individuals rather than organisations.
