SSF unveils updated competency qualifications at Hillhead

THE Strategic Safety Forum (SSF) gathered at this year’s Hillhead exhibition to mark the launch of revised qualifications, which have been integral to sector competency for more than 20 years.

The SSF core member organizations, comprising the Mineral Products Qualifications Council (MPQC), the Mineral Products Association (MPA), British Aggregates Association (BAA), the Institute of Quarrying (IQ), and the Quarries National Joint Advisory Council (QNJAC), together with their members, have worked to support the development of the revised qualifications over the past two years.

The new Level 4 Diploma in Managing Health, Safety and the Environment in mineral processing operations has been officially launched, and its first successful candidate has achieved the qualification. The new Level 6 qualification, launching in August this year, has been reshaped into a true site management pathway. Unlike before, it does not repeat the SHE content already covered at Level 4. Instead, it focuses on the broader skills managers need to run safe, efficient, and sustainable operations.

The updated National Occupational Standards for quarry managers and supervisors provide a clear, modern, and industry-agreed framework for competence. They recognize the strength of existing qualifications and experience in the sector while supporting ongoing development and continuous improvement. 

Completion of these qualifications is an important part of the evidence demonstrating competence in the workplace, alongside appropriate experience, knowledge and ongoing professional development.

By adopting and implementing these standards in a clear, consistent and collaborative manner, the industry can strengthen competence, enhance safety performance, and ensure it remains well-positioned for the future.
