British Aggregates Association
The British Aggregates Association (BAA) is a trade association set up to specifically look after the needs of the independent quarry operator.
It carries the views of the SME operator to all levels of government and regulatory bodies both in the UK and the EU. It is a member of various umbrella organizations such as the CBI, the Construction Products Association and the Scottish Council for Development and Industry. Furthermore, the BAA sits on the Minerals Industry Research Organisation (MIRO) and is a member of MPQC (Mineral Products Training Council). It offers its members a wide range of help and advice in such areas as mineral planning, environmental regulation, archaeology in minerals, health and safety issues and insurance for quarry operators.
The BAA is the only organization that took on the government and the EC in its quest to get the unfair aggregates levy dropped. The BAA also sits on QNJAC (Quarries National Joint Advisory Council), which is chaired by the HSE to oversee health and safety regulations in the industry.
In order to raise the bar in health and safety standards for independent operators, the BAA introduced the Independent Assessment Scheme for quarry sites recognized by the HSE as part of the Target Zero initiative.
